Under the Gun

preflop

The player who acts first before the flop — the seat immediately to the left of the big blind, abbreviated UTG

Definition

"Under the gun" (UTG) is the name for the player who must act first before the flop. This seat sits directly to the left of the big blind. The phrase comes from the idea of being under pressure — you have to make a decision with no information about what anyone else plans to do. At a full nine-handed table, that means acting before eight other players.

Example

You're sitting to the left of the big blind. The dealer shuffles, the blinds are posted, and cards are dealt. Now everyone looks at you — you're first. You look down at your two cards: a 7 and a 2 of different suits (one of the worst starting hands in poker). With eight players left to act after you, there's a good chance someone has a strong hand. You fold. Later in the same hand, the player on the button — who acted last — picks up the same 7-2 offsuit, but since everyone had already folded to them, they raise and steal the blinds. Same cards, completely different situation. That's the power of position.

Why It Matters

Under the gun is widely considered the hardest seat to play from in poker. Because you act first, you have zero information about what the other players intend to do — yet you still have to commit to a decision. A raise from UTG is taken very seriously by experienced players, precisely because everyone knows you took on all that risk with no information. As a beginner, play tight (conservatively) from UTG: stick to strong hands and don't try to get fancy. Save the risky, creative plays for when you have position on your side.
